The Fort Benning Sergeants Major Association enlisted the help of many volunteers to help a retired Vietnam Veteran during its House of Heroes Event held October 29, 2011.
Members of the association and other volunteers repaired the house of 1SG (Retired) Wallace Davis, a 22 year Army Veteran..
Davis was born on May 26, 1933. While living in Columbus, Georgia, he joined the U.S. Army Infantry on November 21, 1955. He would see combat in Vietnam. Mr. Davis met his wife Naomi at Albany State College in 1953 while on Spring Break. They were married on July 30, 1955. 1SG Davis served in 224th AVN BN (RR) Long Thanh North RVN. After serving over 22 years, he retired at the rank of 1SG. His military awards include the National defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Overseas Service Bars, Meritorious Service Medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, Driver Mechanic Badge w/Prop, Expert (M016), Expert (M-14), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster) Wallace & Naomi have two children, Charles & Monique. Wallace and Naomi reside in Upatoi, GA and is an honored hero of his family and his Nation.
Home repairs included, but were not limited to, cleaning, painting, installation of access ramps, installations of screen windows and doors, repair or replacement of basic appliances, and yard maintenance and improvement.
The mission of House of Heroes, Inc. is to recognize and honor military and public safety veterans and/or their spouses who have served our country faithfully and sacrificially. Through service to these veterans and their spouses, House of Heroes, Inc. volunteers attempt to express gratitude that can never be adequately expressed in words alone by: .Improving the living conditions of military and public safety veterans and/or their spouses who are in need of assistance in maintaining their homes. Honoring these American Heroes through the generosity of individuals, civic organizations and corporations. Encouraging leadership and service, team building and volunteerism. In achieving the mission, there shall be no discrimination because of race, religion, sex, age, national origin or disability.
